The Richard Young Gallery is delighted to announce the Tim Motion ‘An Eye For The Sound’ Exhibition, showing through May and June 2010. The show will display a variety of striking images by photographer Tim Motion, featuring portraits of some of the most influential jazz musicians in the history of the genre.

The unique exhibition showcases photographs of jazz icons including Ray Charles, Theolonius Monk, Miles Davis, Bo Diddley, Slim Gaillard and Art Blakey. These arresting images provide an insight into the vibrant world of jazz, capturing its stars in their element, with the passion of their performances clear in every shot.

Since he first attended the Lisbon Jazz Festival in 1971, Tim Motion has built an unrivalled reputation as a jazz photographer after opening a club that brought him into contact with the members of the legendary ‘Newport All-Stars’ who defined the genre.

“The images in this exhibition represent a selection from almost four decades in jazz photography for me, and what a time that has been. The photographs reflect a real labour of love, capturing the great musicians that I have been lucky enough to watch perform, and I am very pleased to have them on display at the Richard Young Gallery. These pictures fuse my passion for jazz music and photography, and through capturing the undeniably great performers portrayed here, strengthens my love of both. Music is, of course, something that cannot be photographed, but with these images I have sought to provide a glimpse of the magic and personality that jazz is so famous for,” said Tim Motion.

An Eye for the Sound will open from 4th May 2010 to 12th June 2010 at The Richard Young Gallery, 4 Holland Street, London, W8 4LT.

Photographs will be available for purchase with prices ranging from £475 -£2500.

After studying Film and Photography in Nottingham, he exhibited his photographs of portraits, landscapes, and nudes in the UK, France, USA, Germany, and Japan between 1977 and 2002. In the late seventies he established a very profitable publishing company, Foto-Roff and Crean Bottoms Productions, for the production of high quality posters and postcards, selling his work and that of other carefully chosen photographers across Europe. In 1985 Charles founded Black and White Publications and opened a gallery of the same name in Covent Garden, London. This ran successfully for six years. A documentary was made in 1989 about Charles Roff, his double life as photographer and publisher, in a film called “All That is Left of Innocence.” The documentary was shown on British Independent Television in 1990.

Warholesque?
7th May – 6th June 2009, Monday to Saturday, 10am-6pm, Private View 6th May, 7-9pm
The Richard Young Gallery, 4 Holland Street, London W8 4LT

“Isn’t life a series of images that change as they repeat themselves?” Andy Warhol

Richard Young is one of the UK’s most renowned celebrity photographers. More than thirty five years after his first depiction of Café Society, Arts Co is delighted to be working with Young on the creation of a new exhibition.

The Richard Young Gallery is pleased to present Warholesque?, an exhibition that invites six contemporary artists to intervene and respond to unseen photographs of Andy Warhol at his inaugural London exhibition in 1978 taken by Richard Young.

Andy Warhol’s art is inseparable from photography. His photographs captured the faces of the rich and famous – musicians, actors, artists, fashion models – from the New York disco scene to London’s café society. Warhol was rarely seen without a camera – it acted as a combination of sketchbook and diary. In his obsessive documentation of the world around him he used various means; audiocassette tape videotape, and of course camera (or multiple cameras), often saving the minutiae of everyday life in his infamous time capsules. ‘A picture means I know where I was every minute. That’s why I take pictures – it’s a visual diary’.

Through his paintings, films, Interview magazine, and as a promoter of numerous people in his circle, Warhol created a superstar machine for accelerating fame and stardom. Richard Young is similarly attached to his camera with a portfolio of iconic and defining images that document popular culture. Over the last 30 years Young has photographed the canon of contemporary society, without the use of makeup artists, special lighting or trick photography, people from Elizabeth Taylor to Johnny Cash, Michael Jackson to Madonna and of course Andy Warhol himself.

Richard Young’s photos of Warhol in 1978 are fascinating today, in as much as they highlight the implicit tension between truth and fiction, reality and invention that is at the core of the celebrity photo. As Warhol once said when asked about his canny portrait technique “who wants the truth?” In this exhibition, Young’s photographs, and indeed Andy Warhol are re-interpreted by contemporary artists – Sir Peter Blake, Gavin Turk, Jamie Shovlin, Jessica Voorsanger, Kay Harwood, Daniel Pasteiner and a surprise guest.
