Louise Bobbe : Behind Closed Doors

The Richard Young Gallery is delighted to present a new body of work by accomplished photographer Louise Bobbe as the first solo exhibition of 2012.

Louise Bobbe’s images evoke a sense of voyeurism and curiosity while her photographic style implies a hidden narrative. A strong emphasis is placed on the anonymity of the sitter – the subject faces are rarely seen. Her bold, feminine images are glimpses of intimate moments ‘behind closed doors’. The exhibition will comprise of mostly large-scale photographs in both colour and black & white.

Bobbe has previously exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery and her Portrait Commissions include such notable figures as Vivienne Westwood, Anish Kapoor and Fiona Rae. Her work is included in distinguished international private collections.

This stunning exhibition will take place from 7 February to 17 March 2012.
Richard Young Gallery, 4 Holland Street, London W8 4LT

The Richard Young Gallery is delighted to present the work of accomplished photographer, Ohad Maiman in his first solo show in the UK.

Maiman’s work explores universal emotive commonalities within the human condition. These emotions cross geographic and generational boundaries, and are manifested on faces and in body language of people around the world. Maiman’s work also investigates the temporal and discordant nature of emotion, for someone who is happy, also knows sadness. 2 Klicks South Of Wonderland explores human desires, particularly the desire to reach the unattainable, which Maiman has titled ‘Wonderland’.

Maiman comments; “Wonderland is not a place you can pin down on a map. It tends to shift a few miles whenever you think you’ve reached it. It’s a place none of us inhabit constantly, but some of us constantly seek. It’s more of an idea than a place; yet the mere act of searching for it ought to keep our sights set in the right direction. It takes marching to your own drumbeat.”

The postmodern dreamers that Maiman depicts searching for Wonderland, are nomadic traveller, devoid of any signifiers of time or nationality, therefore linking them only to the human race as a whole. Echoing a long romantic tradition of seekers, these wanderers are following in the footsteps of Oscar Wilde, Jack Kerouac, and Jim Morrison.

The photographs on display are giclée prints on cold press natural fibre paper, mounted on birch wooden boxes and covered with epoxy resin. This complex production process attributes unique qualities to each image while also revealing ‘the hand of the artist’.

Born in Israel, Maiman served three years in the army before majoring in Visual Arts and Philosophy at Columbia University in New York. He has traveled extensively in the Far East and South America, where his interest in diverse cultures, ways of life and means of happiness was piqued. Ohad Maiman currently lives and works in New York City. A catalogue is available to accompany the exhibition.

/suːpərɪmˈpəʊzd/ ▶verb

The Richard Young Gallery is proud to introduce the work of Spanish photographer, Diego Portuondo in his first solo exhibition in the UK. Superimposed will feature two new bodies of work heavily influenced by architecture: Modern Masters and Oh Paris. Both series showcase his unique approach to photography by highlighting the spectacular effect of superimposition.

Diego Portuondo pays homage to the preeminent artists of the 20th century by superimposing their iconic imagery onto Ibizan churches in Modern Masters. Portuondo’s use of appropriation is an imaginary study commenting on the centuries old practice of religious institutions commissioning artists. He places masterpieces made for interiors on the outside of buildings therefore converting each painting into ‘master graffiti’. This reverenced salute showcases the artist’s mastery of photographic manipulation in this current digital age.

By contrast, Oh Paris is a brooding, atemporal series of photographs capturing Paris at the ‘end of days’. Monochromatic skies are superimposed onto Parisian landmarks, and presented without a sense of time and devoid of life. The intensity of the recurring sky implies the aftermath of a cataclysmic event. Inspired by the artist’s life in the city over a span of six years, these highly charged, inimitable photographs present Paris in an unseen light.

Matjaž Tančič visually integrates man with both natural and urban landscapes through the exciting, new medium of 3D photography. The photographs on display in this exhibition were shot on seven locations in London and Slovenia. By creating a direct correlation between the styling and posing of each model and their environment, Tančič cleverly accentuates the stark contrast between these two opposite settings. Models placed within the natural world appear primal, feral and animal-like. Concurrently, they are also at ease in their surroundings dressed in fabrics and accessories that mimic the foliage, water and rocks cohabiting the space. The urban models, however, are much more aggressive in their stance, posture and positioning while each garment is more tailored and polished. The models appear to have more control of their surroundings exuding an intense power commonly evoked by life in the city. This clever, duplicit presentation allows the viewer to visually jump from city to country, almost physically even, through the medium of 3D.

3D films have been around since the 1950s, but due to the very specific technical processes that must be used to render this medium successfully, it seems that photographers have been reluctant to incorporate these techniques into their artistic practices. While the public is very familiar with 3D videos and movies, 3D photography is very rarely seen. In Slovenia, Matjaž Tančič recently finished shooting the first ever fashion magazine done entirely in 3D, and combined with this groundbreaking exhibition he is taking large strides towards pioneering the incorporation of 3D imagery into contemporary photography.

Artist Biography:

Matjaž Tančič (1982), a young Slovenian photographer, lives and works between London and Ljubljana.

Tančič graduated from the Fashion Photography BA(hons) programme at the London College of Fashion. As a recent graduate, Tančič, impressively, has already been featured in ten solo exhibitions and 38 group exhibitions across Europe. He began his career as a photojournalist for the Slovenian current affairs publication, Mladina magazine, and his photographs have been published Vogue, Playboy, Mercedes Benz Magazine, Modna, Inspire and Look de Book. He was among the six finalists in the 2009 “Google Photography Prize” contest, a worldwide competition of more than 3,500 photographers.

With such an impressive start to his carrier and genuinely unique approach to creating a photograph, Matjaž Tančič is one of contemporary photography’s future stars.

The Richard Young Gallery is delighted to present this series of sensual photographic images from multi-disciplined artist Corinne Manches.

In this, her first photographic exhibition, Manches’ work highlights the beauty of the female through the striking contrast between shadow and light.

The female body is presented in its natural state with light accentuating its form, shape and substance. The images are soft and fluid, suggested rather than defined. These photographs evoke sensuality through subtlety providing the viewer a glimpse into a private moment in time.

Manches studied art and design at Goldsmith’s College. As an illustrator, designer, art teacher, sculptor and photographer, she has gained exposure through a variety of artistic outlets. Manches lives and works in Surrey.

The Richard Young Gallery is dedicated to exhibiting innovative and contemporary fine art photography.

The Richard Young Gallery is delighted to announce the launch of Pret-a-Photo, an exhibition providing visitors with a quick and easy way to go home with their perfect print.

While standard practice when buying from galleries involves lengthy waits and plenty of patience, the gallery’s new collection will be available for immediate sale. Following the history of ‘art shops’ such as Keith Haring’s Pop Shop and Tracey Emin and Sarah Lucas’ Store, works in Pret-a-Photo will be taken off the wall and handed to the customer in its frame. With prices ranging from £50 – £2500, there truly is something for everyone.

Richard Young Gallery continues its reputation for striking and unique shows with this special selection. Images available by the acclaimed photographer Richard Young include exclusive, never-before-seen shots of Hollywood icons such as Sophia Loren, Jack Nicholson, John Travolta, rock royalty Queen, The Who and art legend Andy Warhol. Additional photographs of striking urban street scenes and unique events display his keen eye and subtle wit. This selection from the mid-seventies to early eighties is a true showcase of his diverse oeuvre.

Work by six other photographers is also on display, creating a varied and unique show to suit all tastes. Intimate and inimitable, any print from this selection provides the perfect Christmas present, birthday surprise or personal treat.
